Watch this preview, Oscar contender for sure, especially after the buzz from TIFF
Elephant
It’s 2:16 am here at my new apartment and I just got done watching the movie Elephant by Gus Van Sant and all I can say is Bravo. He had the guts to take a subject so contreversial and create such a defining picture with it, that it actually blows my mind what I just watched. I won’t spoil anything with this movie, go in without knowing anything!! here’s the trailer
MARVEL COMICS BOUGHT BY DISNEY
Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Marvel including its more than 5,000 Marvel characters including “Iron Man,” “Spider-Man,” “X-Men,” “Captain America,” “Fantastic Four,” “Thor,” “Hulk,” “Sub-Mariner” and of course “The Avengers”
Marvel shareholders will get $30 per share in cash plus 0.745 Disney shares for every Marvel share owned. The boards of Disney and Marvel have both approved the deal, which now needs the backing of Marvel shareholders and competition authorities.
So how will this affect the film franchises? Existing franchises made before the formation of Marvel Studios will almost certainly remain where they are – namely “Daredevil,” “Fantastic Four” and all “X-Men” properties at Fox and “Spider-Man” at Sony.
Marvel’s deal with Paramount must legally continue for at least five more films – this will include “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “The First Avenger: Captain America,” “The Avengers” and another project.
With this deal any films made after that, and any new Marvel character properties developed, looks likely to be exclusive to Disney. Over time when the contracts expire, the studio aims to eventually be the sole distributor of Marvel properties (ala Warner Bros. and DC). Marvel Studios in Manhattan Beach will likely remain operating as is.

TV
Hello avid readers, I’m sure you may ask yourself: Joel, for such a movie buff, do you enjoy any other mediums. While I applaud you’re question and pat you’re head in acceptance of said question before an untimely demise befalls you, I answer with: Yes, Television. 9 (short film)
Posted by Joel in Random, Short Films on August 17th, 2009
Shane Acker’s Academy Award Nominated short is becoming a full length feature film. If that wasn’t cool enough, Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch, Day Watch, Wanted) are producing the feature. Here’s the teaser!
I’ve crumbled…
As of this week, Joel will be ordering his first…and hopefully his last Anime…have I fallen so low…well not really, because this anime is dark, and has an awesome story. Would love to see this get a film adaptation under the right direction!
With that being said, here is: Elfen Lied
Halfway Down The Stairs
A great example on how a basic concept can be quite powerful and poetically beautiful with the right person behind it.
From Season 1 of the Muppet Show, Here’s Robin the Frog singing “Halfway Down the Stairs”
Hercules
Essentially, I planned on doing a classic movie review on the Disney Hercules movie…when I went looking for the trailer, I ran into this…expect a review sometime in the future for this piece of cinematic magic.
Gollum’s Song
I watched a video earlier in the day reflecting on the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and I couldn’t help but go on youtube and look up my favorite song from the Trilogy. The main theme of the second film in the trilogy depicts the character of Gollum/Smeagol as being coneiving and pitiful all at once. The lyrics are poetic and it is sung beautifully by Icelandic singer Emiliana Torrini. The song truly gives me shivers everytime I hear it, I actually bought the soundtrack for this song alone, that’s how much I love it. One of Howard Shores crowning achievements in the series (to me at least) is Gollum’s song from the Two Towers soundtrack, let’s take a listen!
